Parent Visas

Parent visas allow Australian citizens, Australian permanent residents and eligible New Zealand citizens to sponsor their parents to enter and remain in Australia.

The Contributory Parent visas are:

Based on current planning levels from the Department of Immigration, the waiting period for Contributory Parent visas is from 12 months to 24 months. An Assurance of Support (AOS) will also be required to be paid as a form of security.

The Non-Contributory Parent visas are:

Unfortunately, based on current planning levels, it is estimated that the Non-Contributory Parent visa will take approximately 30 years to be released for final processing. In some circumstances, the parent can stay in Australia while waiting for the Non-Contributory Parent visa to be approved.

The difference between the Contributory Parent visa and the Non-Contributory Parent visa is the Contributory Parent visa is quite expensive, however you wait 12 to 24 months instead of 30 years.

Visitor Visa (parents)

Due to the long wait with the Non-Contributory Parent visa and/or the substantial visa charges associated with the Contributory Parent visa, a Parent visa may not be viable. Alternatively, you may not meet other requirements for Parent visa perhaps due to the Balance of Family Test (see below).

Does that mean parents cannot visit their family members in Australia? Absolutely No.

Depending on your circumstances, we may be able to help you with the Visitor visa (parents) for travel periods of 3 years, 18 months or 12 months instead of the standard 3 months for a Visitor visa.

Parent Visas – Visa Requirements

The sponsor will need to settled in Australia and be one of the following:

  • an Australian citizen
  • an Australian permanent resident
  • an eligible New Zealand citizen

The applicant must satisfy the Balance of Family Test, namely:

  • at least half of applicant’s children live permanently in Australia
  • that more of the applicant’s children live permanently in Australia than in any other country

For the Contributory Parent Visa, you are spending a lot of money, therefore why not contact Migration Agent Melbourne to ensure there are no errors with the paperwork?
